Verizon is conceding defeat on its crusade to turn a patchwork of dot-com-era businesses into a thriving online operation. The wireless carrier slashed the value of its AOL and Yahoo acquisitions by $4.6 billion, an acknowledgment that tough competition for digital advertising is leading to shortfalls in revenue and profit.
The move will erase almost half the value of the division it had been calling Oath, which houses AOL, Yahoo and other businesses like the Huffington Post . The revision of the Oath division's accounting leaves its goodwill balance -- a measure of the intangible value of an acquisition -- at about $200 million, Verizon said in a filing Tuesday.
It's an ad duopoly battle . Facebook is starting to test search ads in its search results and Marketplace, directly competing with Google's AdWords . Facebook first tried Sponsored Results back in 2012 but eventually shut down the product in 2013. Now it's going to let a small set of automotive, retail, and ecommerce industry advertisers show users ads on the search results page on mobile in the US and Canada.
They'll be repurposed News Feed ads featuring a headline, image, copy text, and a link in the static image or carousel format that can point users to external websites. Facebook declined to share screenshots as it says the exact design is still evolving. Facebook may expand search ads to more countries based on the test's performance. Google CEO Sundar Pichai admitted today that YouTube needs to do better in dealing with conspiracy content on its site that can lead to real-world violence. From a report: During his testimony on Tuesday before the House Judiciary Committee, the exec was questioned on how YouTube handles extremist content that promotes conspiracy theories like Pizzagate and, more recently, a Hillary Clinton-focused conspiracy theory dubbed Frazzledrip. According to an article in Monday's Washington Post, Frazzledrip is a variation on Pizzagate that began spreading on YouTube this spring. In a bizarre series of questions, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) asked Pichai if he knew what Frazzledrip was.
Pichai replied that he was "not aware of the specifics about it."Raskin went on to explain that the recommendation engine on YouTube has been suggesting videos that claim politicians, celebrities and other leading figures were "sexually abusing and consuming the remains of children, often in satanic rituals." He said these new conspiracist claims were echoing the discredited Pizzagate conspiracy, which two years ago led to a man firing shots into a Washington, D.C. pizzeria, in search of the children he believed were held as sex slaves by Democratic Party leaders. Starting Tuesday , Firefox will nudge you to try out options designed to make the web more interesting, more useful or more productive. From a report: Mozilla's new Firefox 64 keeps an eye on what you're up to and prompts you to try extensions and features that could help you with that activity, the browser maker said.
For example, if you open the same tab lots of times, it could suggest you pin it to your tab strip for easier future access. Other suggestions include installing the Facebook Container extension to curtail the social network's snooping, a Google Translate extension to tap into Google's service, and the Enhancer for YouTube extension to do things like block ads and control playback on Google's video site.
ESET researchers have discovered a new Android Trojan using a novel Accessibility-abusing technique that targets the official PayPal app, and is capable of bypassing PayPal's two-factor authentication.
A report elaborates: At the time of writing, the malware is masquerading as a battery optimization tool, and is distributed via third-party app stores.
After being launched , the malicious app terminates without offering any functionality and hides its icon. This video, courtesy of ESET, demonstrates the process in practice.
The to Meng Wanzhou , Huawei’s chief financial officer, 10 days after her arrest in Vancouver. The decision concludes a three-day court hearing in which the judge and the public prosecutor debated whether Wanzhou would breach her bail conditions.
Wanzhou , the daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, has been accused of fraud with a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison. She was arrested by Canadian officials at the request of the U.S. government on December 1 while changing planes on her way to Mexico. As part of her bail conditions, the court has ordered her to pay C$10 million — about $7.5 million — and await U.S. extradition from her Vancouver home. According to reports, Wanzhou must relinquish her passport, wear an ankle bracelet and remain at home between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The U.S. Department of Justice alleges Wanzhou misled American financial institutions and allowed an unofficial Huawei subsidiary, called SkyCom, to do business in Iran despite U.S. sanctions.
Huawei didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
President Donald Trump , in an interview with Reuters, said he would be willing to intervene in the Justice Department’s case, citing national security concerns. “If I think it’s good for what will be certainly the largest trade deal ever made – which is a very important thing – what’s good for national security – I would certainly intervene if I thought it was necessary,” Trump said. Canada has arrested Huawei's chief financial officer on suspicion of violating U.S. trade sanctions against Iran. "Wanzhou Meng, who is also the deputy chair of Huawei's board and the daughter of company founder Ren Zhengfei, was arrested in Vancouver at the request of U.S. authorities," reports The Globe and Mail.
From the report: "Wanzhou Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1. She is sought for extradition by the United States, and a bail hearing has been set for Friday," Justice department spokesperson Ian McLeod said in a statement to The Globe and Mail. "As there is a publication ban in effect, we cannot provide any further detail at this time. The ban was sought by Ms. Meng.
A Canadian source with knowledge of the arrest said U.S. law enforcement authorities are alleging that Ms. Meng tried to evade the U.S. trade embargo against Iran but provided no further details. Since at least 2016, U.S. authorities have been reviewing Huawei's alleged shippingof U.S.-origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of U.S. export and sanctions laws. No matter how wonderful and entertaining your website is, it needs to convert leads into customers. Otherwise, it doesn’t contribute to your brand and business. What kind of content do you need so that your leads are more likely to become customers? What is the secret of not just quality content but content that converts leads?
Your business needs to find and keep customers in order to be profitable. Your website copy is an important aspect of your marketing strategy, but does it contribute to the bottom line? While increasing website traffic and social media engagement are important, your copy needs to bring in paying customers. The fact is, only a fraction of your leads are going to ever become your customers. When you look at the statistics on lead conversion, it’s only reasonable to expect between as few as 1 in every 5 leads to ever convert.
Knowing this, you know you have an important task if you want to create conversion-worthy content. You need to know the questions, interests, needs and concerns of your qualified leads, focusing on solving their problems rather than catering to all your leads or your entire customer base.
The first goal of your content is to create brand awareness. You use content to educate the target audience and use content marketing material to attract leads. Blogs are a good way to figuring out what the audience wants and needs. They can be used to answer questions about the topic.
The next step is to educate and nurture your leads with content that goes deeper into the topic. At this point prospective customers are looking for more information; the content needs to be more specific to your company, and solve problems. A dynamic content marketing strategy that seamlessly takes your audience from leads to prospects to customers will need other content channels that to motivate your potential buyers further along.
These include White papers, How-to videos, Industry cheat sheets, guides, and eBooks. At this stage, you need to deal with challenges from prospective customers, provide solutions, and nudge them on. Show them what your business or product can do for them. You need to build trust and communicate directly with them through social media or on the phone. Finally, it’s time for action.
Visitors have had time to become aware of your company, and it’s time to get them to take action. At this stage, the goal of the content must be to get the sale or subscription. The prospect must see taking action as a way to help himself and improve his life. The call to action must clearly highlight the value visitors receive in exchange for taking action. The two-fold goal of gated content is to deliver value to readers and capture their contact information so that the business can retain them. Aim to satisfy and retain your hard-won customers.
Research shows that it’s much cheaper to sell to existing customers than to look for new ones. And a satisfied customer is an invaluable ad for your business.
A decade or two ago age, gender, and location were often stumbling blocks that prevented someone from starting a new career or business, but technological advances have opened up a host of opportunities for freelancers. What does it take to thrive in this exciting new world?
How do continuous technological changes impact you?
Modern technology means that it’s now possible to work from almost anywhere, offer a service or product suited to your background, interests, and experience. You don’t need a physical location near to your clients - for many freelancers the world is their client. Your race, gender, looks, age no longer matter, as long as you have a product or service of value to offer that people want to buy.
Where do you start?
Take an honest look at yourself and make a list of your interests, hobbies, talents, and experience. What are you passionate about? It’s much easier to keep going when you do something that you love. What would you like to do, and why? What are you good at? And don’t forget your experience; you probably have more than you realize.
What service or product can you offer?
What are you good at doing, or can learn to be good at? Would you love to provide advice on building websites, or apps? Start a blog about your travels? Maybe you’re a health fanatic with deep knowledge about nutrition and exercise. Search the Internet for your favorite topics; you’d be surprised at what people make money out of.
Who will your customers be?
Get a clear picture who your customers will be. Is there a demand for what you can offer? Spend time, effort and money on research. There must be a demand for your product and people must be willing to pay for it; otherwise, your business is a non-starter. Educate yourself and be prepared to keep on learning. Get to know your specialty inside out. Take courses and re-educate yourself if needed. If you want to stay in the game you can never stop learning. There are numerous courses in different formats available over the Internet – from free to expensive ones.
Be professional
See and treat yourself and your venture as a business. Get a professional website, probably a logo, create an online presence. Present a professional front when you deal with providers, clients, and others in your field. And make sure your product or service delivers what it promises; technology wouldn’t rescue an inferior product.
No matter where you live, how old you are – as long as you have the skills needed, you can be competitive in the market.

San Francisco offers both locals and visitors great activities, like the Young Museum and the Exploratorium, or amazing beaches, where kids can play for hours, and of course the 1,000 acre Golden Gate Park and the Presidio national park.
But the best part is that the city is easy to navigate and most kid friendly places are in a concentrated areas with access to public transportation. So here are my favorite places in San Francisco. If you have another favorite spot let me know.
